Smoke Ridge goats thrive in Montana, and have successfully adapted to many different locations across the U.S. and Canada. They are raised on natural forage (summer pasture and winter hay).

Spanish—
Smoke Ridge Boo We raise Spanish goats for their strong Maternal attributes, Hardiness, and Longevity.

Smoke Ridge started in 1991 with pure Spanish goats. Although Boer blood, and more recently, Savanna, has been added to the herd, about one third of our breeding does are pure Spanish, and we will continue to maintain a significant proportion of our breeding does as such.

Spanish goats have the productivity, maternal attributes, hardiness, longevity, high tight udders, and good feet and legs that enable Smoke Ridge to efficiently produce the kind of slaughter kids that the meat market wants, and therefore makes it possible for us to operate a profitable meat goat business. Smoke Ridge Spanish goats are recognized as their own purebred Spanish bloodline.

Boer and Savanna blood—
Increased meat yield is the hallmark of the "improved" breeds: their carcasses typically grade as "Selection 1", which earns the producer top dollar. Since the mid-1990s, Smoke Ridge has utilized some Boer blood in our herd, and we added Savanna blood starting in 2006. Both breeds have added to the carcass quality of our "Montana Hardy" meat goats.

Smoke Ridge

Montana's harsh winter climate and uncertain annual rainfall make it a challenging place to raise livestock profitably, but Smoke Ridge goats are more than up to the challenge.
