Why choose our goats?
Because Smoke Ridge goats are good at their job: converting the natural forage in pastures, including brush and weeds, into meat. Goat meat, also called 'chevon' and 'cabrito', is a healthy red meat for which the U.S. demand is not only greater than the supply, but for which the demand is growing faster than the supply. If you have a meaty slaughter goat, it will sell for a good price. If you raised it efficiently, you'll have money left after you pay the bills! That's what we do, and that's what we breed for.
Our does (nannies) kid out on pasture with no assistance. They raise about two kids each, every year, without any supplemental feeding of grain needed. Our goats get summer pasture, and winter grass-alfalfa hay.
Smoke Ridge slaughter kids reach market weight on natural forage in about six months. Our goats respect electric fence (hot-wire), are used to being handled by people, and are raised with livestock guardian dogs. Smoke Ridge prices goats, delivered to you, so that the goats should earn their purchase price back within two years.
When choosing goats, please consider:
We select and cull rigorously, to ensure that we have, and have available for you, the most productive goat possible.
Goat price: As a teacher and a custom seamstress, we must have goats that pay their own expenses, and put some money in the bank every year. Smoke Ridge goats are cost effective.
Maintenance costs: Smoke Ridge goats are bred to survive and thrive on low-input natural forage, not expensive "sacked" feeds.
On-Farm Testing: We know from our records which goats are good producers, but have also added "on-farm testing" to help ensure continual improvement.
Ability to raise kids successfully without assistance: Getting bred, carrying kids to term, birthing them, and raising them is what a doe is expected to do. Almost all do it very well. The very few who don't, well, they are needed elsewhere (and it's not a goat-breeding farm!).
Libido: Bucks are expected to work hard for three weeks every year, then they have more than eleven months to get ready for "next time". So far, none have complained!
Adjusting to your Operation: Smoke Ridge goats are already used to Livestock Guardian Dogs, people, and hot wire, making it easier for you to run a successful meat goat operation.
Breed: Different breeds have different strengths, which we feel complement each other. We use the following breeds to create our goats. . .
